We investigated the effects of 30% ethanol extract of blueberry (VC30) on improvement of constipation in an in vivo model treated with Bifidobacterium bifidum. The total polyphenol content of VC30 was 275.12¡¾2.97 mg GAE/g and bacterial growth of B. bifidum was not affected by VC30 containing medium. Investigation of improvement of intestinal function, revealed that the gastrointestinal transit in Balb/c mice treated with B. bifidum and VC30 increased significantly compared to the control group (P<0.05). For improvement of constipation, VC30 was administered orally for seven days with B. bifidum to loperamide-induced SD rats. The amount of feces in VC30 groups (VC30 300 or 500 mg/kg BW with B. bifidum) was significantly higher than in the Lop group (loperamide and B. bifidum treated group) (P<0.05). These findings indicated that polyphenol-rich blueberry extract was a potent candidate to improve constipation.
